The South Sudan Media Authority officially launched its new website on Wednesday under the theme “Refer to the Source,” with support from Human Rights Journalists.
Speaking at the event, Managing Director Elijah Alier Kuai stated that the website will serve as the official communication platform for the Media Authority.
He emphasized that it is designed to counter misinformation and promote transparency by linking to verified social media accounts of government institutions.
“We have tasked the consultancy firm that developed the website with creating official social media pages for government institutions, which will be linked directly to the platform for easy access to accurate information,” Alier explained.
A standout feature of the website is a dedicated section for accredited journalists and licensed media houses in South Sudan. Media professionals will be able to apply for accreditation via email, an approach intended to support those actively working in the field.
According to Alier, the new platform will also aid in regulating media practitioners and contribute to the development of a pluralistic media environment across the country.
David Amour Majur, Press Secretary in the Office of the President, urged caution in the administration of the platform, warning against misuse by government officials.
“Many government websites have failed in the past due to individuals using them for personal gain or withholding login details, making them inaccessible when needed,” Majur noted.
He stressed the importance of collective accountability and transparency in maintaining the platform’s integrity.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Information, Communication, and Technology called on all government officials to refrain from using personal email accounts for official communications.
He underscored the need for security, professionalism, and integrity and encouraged officials to transition to government-issued email addresses.
The website will be managed by the Media Authority, in collaboration with the National Communication Authority and the Ministry of Information, Communication Technology, and Postal Services, ensuring regulatory oversight and sustainability.
