SOUTH SUDAN: Mayor Bans Rearing and Movement Of Livestock In South Sudan’s Capital, Juba

By Debora Akur Chol, South Sudan
Juba City Mayor, Johnson Swaka, has announced a ban on the rearing and movement of livestock within the city, citing concerns over public order and urban management.
The new directive, which was broadcast on the state-owned South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC), mandates that all residents and local authorities adhere to the new regulations.
“No individual is allowed to keep cattle, sheep, or goats in residential areas within the jurisdiction of Juba City Council,” the order declared.
“The Chief Executive Officer of Juba City Council, block directors, and the general public are required to ensure the immediate implementation of this directive,” it said further.
The movement of livestock has been a common sight in Juba, driven by pastoralists seeking pasture and water for their animals.
However, this practice has often resulted in tensions with local communities and disruptions to traffic flow, highlighting the urgent need for stricter urban policies to manage these activities.
