President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan returned to Juba on Friday following a five-day official visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, details regarding the outcomes of his trip remain scarce.
Ambassador David Amuor Majur, the Presidential Press Secretary, confirmed that President Kiir engaged in multiple diplomatic discussions with Emirati officials, concentrating on areas of development and economic collaboration. Nonetheless, there has been no release of official photographs, press statements, or coverage from Emirati media regarding these meetings during the visit.
Upon his arrival at Juba International Airport, President Kiir was welcomed by Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, the Vice President for the Economic Cluster, along with other high-ranking government officials.
A senior government figure, who opted to remain anonymous, refuted recent rumors circulating on social media that suggested the president would extend his visit in the Gulf, labeling such claims as “fake news.”
This trip marks Kiir’s third journey to the UAE in 2025. His previous visit in June lasted ten days and generated speculation about his health, given the lack of comprehensive updates from the government. His initial trip of the year in February was characterized as a three-day working visit aimed at enhancing bilateral relations.
South Sudan and the UAE enjoy diplomatic and trade relationships, with Abu Dhabi providing humanitarian assistance to the conflict-affected nation.
Political analyst Edmond Yakani recently emphasized the importance of transparency from the government concerning the president’s foreign travels and the outcomes of his engagements in development and economic matters.
“Public briefings on the results of these visits are essential to keep citizens informed about the president’s diplomatic initiatives,” Yakani stated.
