SOUTH SUDAN: Jonglei State Governor Labels Red Belt Armed Group as Criminal

The Jonglei State Government has condemned the recent rise in violent attacks linked to the Red Belt Criminal Group.
In a joint statement today, Governor Riek Gai Kok Teil demanded immediate action from security and law enforcement agencies. He warned residents that harbouring or aiding criminals is a serious offence, stating, “Anyone found cooperating with these groups will face the full force of the law.”
To reinforce this message, directives have been issued to the Bor County Commissioner and the Town Mayor to bolster local laws and enhance enforcement against criminal activities. The statement called on National Security Forces and other agencies to use all available intelligence to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Commissioner Ateny Pech urged citizens to cooperate with military and security forces, stressing the importance of vigilance for restoring peace.
On behalf of all political parties in Jonglei, Hon. Wany Bum expressed solidarity with the government, stating, “Together, we reaffirm our commitment to peace, security, and justice. Criminal elements will not divide us.”
Hon. Minister of Information, Nyamal Lony, reiterated the government’s condemnation of the attacks, thanking the National Government and National Security Service for their swift response.
In response, Red Belt leader Leek Mamer Leek clarified that Red Belt is not a rebel group, but a local defence force established to protect civilians from violence and the Murle criminals they have endured for decades. He emphasised that the group intends to defend citizens and stated that the recent misunderstanding should not tarnish their reputation.
