SOUTH SUDAN: EU Delegation Visits South Sudan To Address Ongoing Crisis

Dr. Annette Weber, the EU Special Representative to the Horn of Africa, on Thursday, arrived in Juba at the request of EU High Representative/Vice President, H.E. Kaja Kallas.
During her visit, Dr. Weber engaged in discussions with key members of the South Sudanese government, including the Vice President, His Excellency Dr. Benjamin Bol Mel, as well as the Ministers of Information, Justice and Constitutional Affairs, and Cabinet Affairs.
Despite her efforts, Dr. Weber was unable to meet with His Excellency, the First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.
In her meetings, Dr. Weber expressed the European Union’s deep concern regarding the escalating violence in various regions of South Sudan, alongside the numerous breaches of the peace agreement.
She urged the nation’s leaders to set aside their differences, prioritize constructive dialogue, and take swift measures for de-escalation. The EU emphasized the importance of recommitting to the peace agreement and ensuring its implementation by all parties involved.
Dr. Weber praised the ongoing initiatives by regional bodies, particularly IGAD and the African Union, aimed at mitigating the crisis in South Sudan. She reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting these efforts.
Additionally, she highlighted the EU’s continuous work in addressing the conflict in Sudan, which significantly affects the stability of South Sudan.
The European Union remains steadfast in its solidarity with the South Sudanese people and calls on their leaders to strive for a peaceful and prosperous future.
