SOUTH SUDAN: Dr. James Wani Igga Sworn In As SPLM Secretary-General

Dr. James Wani Igga officially took the oath of office, as the Secretary-General of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), during a ceremony at the SPLM House in Juba on Tuesday.
The event, attended by party members clad in the movement’s signature red attire, was marked by chants of “SPLM Oyee” as Justice James Alteib officiated the proceedings.
Dr. Igga assumed his new role alongside key appointments, including Bol Makueng as Secretary for Political Affairs and Mobilization, and Kuong Danhier Gatluak as First Deputy Secretary-General.
In a related move, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir defended Dr. Igga’s appointment, emphasizing that it should not be seen as a demotion, but a strategic decision to strengthen the party.
Kiir had issued a series of decrees on February 10, 2025, which included replacing Igga as Vice President with Benjamin Bol Mel, a trusted advisor with growing influence in government.
Kiir, who also serves as the SPLM Chairperson, rejected claims that Igga’s shift in position was a downgrade.
“This appointment is not a demotion but a recognition of Dr. Igga’s vast experience and his ability to harmonize the party. His leadership is essential in preparing the SPLM for the challenges ahead, including the upcoming elections,” Kiir stated.
The President reaffirmed his commitment to aligning government institutions with the SPLM’s vision.
“The SPLM is the founding party of this nation, and it is our duty to ensure it remains strong and united, ready to lead,” he added.
In his acceptance speech, Igga expressed his gratitude to President Kiir and pledged to bring “new energy and innovation” to the party.
“I am honored to take on this role at such a critical time in our party’s history,” he said. “These changes will not deter us from advancing the SPLM’s goals. Together, we will work to strengthen our party and prepare for the future.”
The leadership reshuffle comes amid rising political tensions in South Sudan, as the SPLM prepares for elections set for December 2026.
Analysts suggest that the changes are part of Kiir’s efforts to consolidate power within the party and address internal divisions.
Edmund Yakani, a South Sudanese political observer and Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), noted mixed public reactions to Igga’s appointment. “Some see it as undermining, while others view it as a necessary internal arrangement within the SPLM, provided consensus is reached among party members,” Yakani explained.
Yakani urged the public to respect the SPLM’s internal decisions, as long as they do not result in violence.
“Real politics are at play within the SPLM. I hope these developments will serve the common good and not create friction that could lead to violence,” he concluded.
