A campaign was launched aimed rising awareness about the brutal killing and harassment of the lesbian, gay, bisexuality, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex (LGBTQI+) community.
The campaign was launched by the Sebokeng South African Police Service (SAPS) Social Crime Prevention unit, in collaboration with the Department of Health, Department of Social Development, Badumetse Batho (NGO), and the Johandeo Wellness and Development Center.
Sergeant Maria Molefi said:”I call on community members to respect and treat the LGBTQI+ community with dignity. I also reaffirm SAPS’s commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for all, including the LGBTQI+ community.”
Constable Phuthi Senwamadi, an LGBTQI+ ambassador at Sebokeng SAPS, emphasized the importance of reporting any ill-treatment by the police to the Station Management.
As a detective assigned to LGBTQI+ cases, she noted that many victims do not pursue their cases, believing that the police will not investigate them. She urged the community to cooperate with the police to ensure perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted.
Contact details for the Station Commander, Social Crime Coordinator, Sector Managers, and Charge Office Commander were shared with attendees to facilitate communication and support.
Other stakeholders also presented the services they offer to the LGBTQI+ community, enhancing the network of support available.
Sebokeng police spokesperson Sergeant Nthabiseng Mokhachane echoed the plea for the LGBTQI+ community to report any crimes committed against them.
Constable Phuthi Senwamadi, a dedicated LGBTQI+ ambassador, reassured community members of her availability and willingness to assist them.
