By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Federal Medical Centre in Abuja has issued a formal clarification addressing widespread social media discussions surrounding the tragic death of Ms Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, a fast rising singer popularly known as Nanyah, who succumbed to severe neurotoxic complications from a snake bite sustained on Saturday.
In a press statement signed by Dr Bioku Muftau, Head of Clinical Services, released on Sunday, the hospital expressed profound condolences to the Nwagene family, acknowledging the immense pain of losing a loved one and extending heartfelt sympathies during this grieving period.
The management firmly refuted circulating allegations that anti snake venom was unavailable or that the medical team provided inadequate or delayed response.
According to the statement, upon Ms Nwagene’s arrival at the facility, the medical staff acted promptly and administered comprehensive emergency care.
This included resuscitation efforts, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the immediate administration of polyvalent snake antivenom.
A thorough yet rapid clinical evaluation revealed that the patient had developed severe neurotoxic complications as a direct result of the snake bite.
Efforts were made to stabilize her condition and prepare for transfer to the Intensive Care Unit for advanced management.
However, her health deteriorated suddenly just before the transfer could occur. The team responded diligently with cardiopulmonary resuscitation and additional life saving interventions, but regrettably, she could not be revived.
The hospital emphasized its unwavering commitment to high standards of patient care, transparency, and professional integrity, describing the claims of negligence or resource shortages as unfounded and inconsistent with the events that unfolded.
It urged the public to rely on verified information from credible sources rather than unconfirmed speculation on social media, which can exacerbate distress for the bereaved family and erode trust in healthcare services.
The Federal Medical Centre reiterated its dedication to excellence in medical practice and remains open to any legitimate inquiries or further clarifications regarding the incident.
The untimely passing of the 26 year old Abuja based artist, known for her talents in classical, jazz, RnB, and soul music, has sparked broader conversations about emergency healthcare access in Nigeria, particular
ly for snake bite cases.
