Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has been suspended for two La Liga matches after being sent off for dissent during his team’s 1-1 draw against Osasuna on Saturday.
The Spanish football federation’s disciplinary committee confirmed the decision on Wednesday, dismissing Madrid’s appeal.
Bellingham, who insisted his comments were not directed at the referee, will now miss crucial league fixtures against Girona on February 23 and Real Betis on March 2.
Real Madrid attempted to argue that the 21-year-old England international had not insulted referee Jose Munuera Montero, but the disciplinary committee ruled that the club’s evidence was “insufficient” to overturn the referee’s official report.
In his defense, Bellingham stated “I think you can see clearly in the video, that I remember the incident very well. It was an expression I was saying to myself.
“I wasn’t even directing myself toward the referee, but obviously, there was a misunderstanding.”
Despite this, the Spanish federation upheld the referee’s decision, reinforcing the “presumption of veracity” in his match report.
Real Madrid has expressed frustration with refereeing decisions in recent weeks, accusing Spanish officials of bias.
The club recently sent a formal complaint to the federation, calling La Liga officiating “rigged” and highlighting several controversial decisions that have gone against them.
Adding to the controversy, referee Munuera Montero has faced online abuse and threats since the incident, prompting the Spanish federation to condemn the attacks as “repulsive”.
Bellingham’s suspension comes at a critical time for Los Blancos, who are struggling for form in La Liga.
Real Madrid have failed to win their last three league games, allowing arch-rivals Barcelona to draw level on points and take the lead on goal difference.
