Police in Lilongwe have arrested Patricia Kaliati, a prominent Malawian politician and Secretary General of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), over an alleged felony conspiracy.
Kaliati was arrested on Thursday and is being charged with conspiracy to commit a felony under Section 404 of the Malawi Penal Code. According to Peter Kalaya, National Police spokesperson, Kaliati is suspected of conspiring with two other individuals, who are still at large.
The Malawi Police Service confirmed Kaliati’s arrest through an official written statement, reference number MPS/PR/24/10/2024, dated October 24, 2024.
Kaliati has previously faced legal issues, including an arrest in 2013 related to President Bingu wa Mutharika’s death. As a senior member of the UTM party and former cabinet member, this development may significantly impact Malawi’s political landscape.
