The English Premier League (EPL) has postponed the highly anticipated Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool, originally scheduled for Saturday, December 7, at 12:30 GMT, due to safety concerns caused by severe weather conditions from Storm Darragh.
The decision was made after an emergency Safety Advisory Group meeting held at Goodison Park on Saturday morning.
The meeting, which involved officials from Everton and Liverpool, Merseyside Police, and Liverpool City Council, concluded that the match could not proceed safely.
Gale-force winds and an amber severe wind warning, in effect until 6:00 GMT on Sunday, presented significant risks to fans, players, and staff.
In a statement titled “Everton v Liverpool postponed because of bad weather”, Everton expressed their disappointment but emphasised the importance of safety.
“Whilst we appreciate this will be deeply disappointing for supporters, the safety of fans, staff, and players is of paramount importance.
Information relating to a rearranged date for the fixture will be announced in due course. All tickets purchased for the original fixture will remain valid for the rearranged fixture,” the club announced.
Liverpool echoed these sentiments, adding, “Severe weather and high winds have also resulted in severe travel disruption in and around Merseyside.” The club acknowledged the frustration of fans but stressed that safety must come first.
Storm Darragh has caused widespread disruption across Merseyside, with high winds impacting travel and creating hazardous conditions.
Merseyside Police have advised against all non-essential travel, and other sporting events, including rugby union and horse racing, have also been affected.
The postponement also carries emotional weight, as this derby was set to be the last at Goodison Park before Everton transitions to its new stadium.
Despite the fixture’s rescheduling, the deadline for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) squad adjustments remains unchanged at 11:00 GMT on Saturday.
Details of the new date for the Merseyside derby will be announced in due course. Fans are advised to retain their tickets, which will remain valid for the rescheduled game.
