Police Warn Against Recirculation Of Old Videos, Caution Public Over National Security Implications

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised alarm over a disturbing trend of resurfacing and circulating old video content.
According to the authorities, the trend aims to malign the image of the Force and undermine national security.
In a press release issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Police condemned what it described as “mischief” designed to portray the institution in a negative light.
It warned that such acts could destabilize public trust and create unnecessary tension.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, expressed concern about two specific videos currently making rounds on social media.
One features a Police Mobile Force (PMF) officer lamenting poor welfare conditions during a deployment to Yobe State, a clip the Police say is several years old.
The Force noted that administrative measures were taken at the time and the issues raised were adequately addressed.
The second video involves an officer from the Counter Terrorism Unit, who allegedly claimed that banditry was politically motivated and that operatives were sent into conflict zones without sufficient ammunition.
The NPF clarified that the video was thoroughly investigated when it first appeared, and the claims were found to be false.
Disciplinary action was reportedly taken against those involved for spreading misinformation.
“The recirculation of these videos at this critical time is a deliberate attempt to bring the institution into disrepute and create panic in the minds of average Nigerians,” the statement read.
The IGP urged members of the public to verify content before sharing, cautioning against the spread of falsehood that may erode public confidence in the Police and endanger internal security.
He emphasized that the current Police leadership is actively working to improve officer welfare and operational efficiency.
Egbetokun warned that those behind the re-circulation of outdated or misleading content will be held accountable, stating that the Police will not tolerate any act that seeks to ridicule the institution or incite unrest.
He reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to upholding law and order, assuring Nigerians of the Force’s readiness to combat crime across the country.
