Nigeria: Police Inspector Shoots Dead Popular Ogene Musician in Enugu, Sparks Public Outcry

A police inspector attached to the Enugu State Police Command has allegedly shot dead a well-known Nigerian musician, Okezie Mba, popularly called Igbo-Jah, during an event at the Anti-Cult Unit headquarters.
Mba, renowned for his Ogene music, reportedly sustained gunshot wounds after officers began firing indiscriminately at the event on Friday.
According to reports, the musician was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries before arrival.
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident, stating that the officer involved had been arrested and was currently in detention.
In an official statement, Ndukwe disclosed, “The musician was reportedly leaving the Squad’s headquarters after a friendly visit when, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim.” He added that Mba’s body has been deposited in the mortuary pending an autopsy.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department to lead a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mba’s death. Uzuegbu expressed deep condolences to the musician’s family, describing the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable.” He assured the public that the inspector and any other individuals found culpable would face disciplinary action in accordance with the law.
