Palace of Oba of Benin Disclaims Planned Igue Festival Drama in Lagos

The Palace of the Oba of Benin has dissociated itself from a planned dramatisation of the Igue Festival by the Association for Cultural and Economic Renaissance of Edo (ACERE).
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Saturday by Mr. Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Chief Press Secretary to the Oba of Benin.
The Igue Festival, a significant cultural and religious celebration in the Benin Kingdom, is traditionally reserved for the Oba of Benin.
According to Iguobaro, the planned event, scheduled for Sunday, November 24, at the Muson Centre in Lagos, is being organised without the consent or consultation of His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II.
“The Palace expressed serious reservations about the proposed drama, noting that it would distort the age-long custom and traditional performance of the Igue Festival,” Iguobaro said.
The Benin Traditional Council has taken legal action to prevent the event. According to the statement, a court order was secured on Friday, restraining ACERE from using the Oba’s image or promoting the event without his approval.
The Palace also cautioned the public against being misled by groups claiming to promote Benin culture without proper consultation with the Oba of Benin.
