Nigerian Sports Minister Calls for Overhaul after Country’s Disappointing 2024 Olympics Performance
By Onoja Baba, Abuja, Nigeria
Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, on Saturday, described Team Nigeria’s performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics as a major disappointment.
Speaking on X.com, Enoh lamented the country’s failure to secure any medals, calling it a “Paris disaster.”
The minister emphasized that the dismal outcome was not solely due to the athletes’ efforts but a reflection of broader systemic issues that require urgent attention. Enoh stressed the need for comprehensive reforms within Nigeria’s sports administration, particularly in the election processes of sports federation leaders.
In a press briefing at the Nigerian Embassy in Paris, Enoh outlined his plans to prevent future failures, which include ensuring that only the most suitable candidates are elected to lead the various sports federations.
He acknowledged the upcoming sports federation elections as a critical opportunity to implement these changes.
“We need to review the election process for our sports federations to ensure we have the right people in leadership positions. The recent performance at the Olympics is not just a failure of the athletes but a failure of the entire system. Immediate action is required to address these issues,” Enoh stated.
Despite the poor performance, Enoh asserted that the ministry had made substantial efforts to prepare the athletes, providing necessary financial and logistical support.
“We did everything as a ministry to prepare the athletes adequately and provide them with every financial support, but unfortunately, the performance did not produce any podium finish,” he said.
Looking ahead, Enoh vowed to ensure that the forthcoming sports federation elections would be rigorously scrutinized to guarantee that only the most qualified and dedicated individuals are chosen. He compared the federation elections to the national elections, highlighting their significance and the need for high standards.
“This call for reform aims to enhance the leadership and effectiveness of Nigeria’s sports federations, paving the way for improved performance on the global stage,” he added.
The minister’s remarks have sparked a renewed discussion about the state of sports administration in Nigeria and the necessary steps to ensure better outcomes in future international competitions.
