Nigeria: Wike Criticises Atiku, Says Nigerians Have Rejected Him

Nigerian Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, stating that Nigerians have rejected him following his repeated failure to win the presidency.
Wike made the remark during a luncheon he hosted for the 10th Legislative Assembly of Rivers State on Saturday.
Atiku had earlier criticised Wike over the outcome of the local government elections in Rivers State, where the Action Peoples Party (APP) won 22 out of 23 chairmanship seats. Atiku suggested that the results indicated Wike’s rejection by the people of Rivers State.
In response, Wike dismissed Atiku’s comments, pointing out that the PDP did not participate in the elections, while also referencing Atiku’s defeats in the 2019 and 2023 presidential elections.
“We never contested the local government elections. Did we contest? Did we pick forms?” Wike asked. “I hear Atiku Abubakar say, ‘Oh, they have rejected me in Rivers State.’ Assuming, though not conceding, he has lost so many times, Nigerians have also rejected him.”
Wike further criticised Atiku, stating, “If you say that for an election we did not contest, it shows Nigerians have rejected us, it is okay. But you who contested and failed woefully, Nigerians have rejected you; therefore, pack and go home.”
