In a historic moment for the Oyo Kingdom, Governor Seyi Makinde on Monday presented the Staff of Office to the newly appointed Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Owoade.
The ceremonial event, held at the governor’s office in Agodi, Ibadan, marked the official coronation of the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.
Governor Makinde approved Owoade’s appointment last Friday in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade. The announcement ended months of anticipation and speculation following the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III in April 2022, after a remarkable 50-year reign.
The ceremony drew a distinguished audience that included traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials, and jubilant Oyo indigenes. Prayers were offered by Islamic, Christian, and traditional clerics, setting the tone for the cultural and spiritual significance of the occasion.
The event also featured vibrant musical and cultural performances, symbolizing the continuation of Oyo’s rich heritage.
While presenting the Staff of Office, Governor Makinde described Oba Owoade as more than a monarch, emphasising his role as a custodian of the kingdom’s cultural and historical legacy.
The governor expressed confidence in the new Alaafin’s ability to lead with wisdom and integrity, fostering unity and development in the kingdom.
“We are assured that Oba Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a strong commitment to fostering unity,” Makinde said.
He further highlighted the significance of the Alaafin’s position in preserving the cultural fabric of the Yoruba people and ensuring the progress of Oyo Kingdom.
In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade pledged to focus on the development of the kingdom and the welfare of its people.
He vowed to uphold the traditions and values of the Oyo Kingdom while embracing initiatives that drive youth empowerment, cultural preservation, and economic growth.
“I will devote myself to the advancement and prosperity of the Oyo Kingdom while ensuring that the traditions and values that have sustained us for generations remain steadfast,” Oba Owoade declared.
