Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives, and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
The governor formally communicated his decision through a resignation letter addressed to the chairman of the NNPP in Diso–Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area. The resignation takes effect from January 25, 2026.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party for the platform it provided him since 2022 and acknowledged the support he received from party leaders and members across Kano State.
He wrote: “I write with a deep sense of gratitude to formally notify the leadership of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) of my decision to resign my membership of the party.”
He cited persistent internal crises within the party, pointing to leadership disputes and unresolved legal battles as factors that have weakened cohesion and stability within the NNPP.
“In recent times, the party has been confronted with persistent internal challenges arising from leadership disagreements and ongoing legal processes.”
The governor noted that divisions within the party had deepened, creating uncertainty at both the state and national levels, and affecting the confidence of party members.
“The growing disenfranchisement among party members has created deep divisions within the party structure.”
Governor Yusuf stated that his decision was reached after careful reflection and was taken in what he described as the overall interest of Kano State and its people.
I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State.”
He emphasized that the move was made without ill will and reaffirmed his commitment to peace, unity, and the continued development of the state.
“This decision is taken in good faith, without any ill will, and with a continued commitment to peace, unity, and the p
rogress of Kano State.”
