NIGERIA: YouTube Solved Nollywood’s Royalty Problem – Ronke Oshodi-Oke
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Nollywood actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke has described YouTube as a game-changer for Nigeria’s film industry, noting that the platform has given filmmakers greater control over their content and earnings.
Speaking on Nollywood On Radio, the actress explained that before the rise of YouTube, many producers struggled to earn royalties because third-party marketers often withheld payments, leaving filmmakers with little to survive on.
She said: “Before, it used to be very difficult to get royalties when you produced a movie. Thank God now that you have your own YouTube, you are your own marketer, your own producer, your own executive producer. You do everything on your own. Nobody owes you anything,”
According to her, YouTube has allowed Nollywood creators to independently produce, market, and distribute their films while retaining full income generated from their work. She added that the platform has made the industry more inclusive, enabling filmmakers to connect directly with audiences and build sustainable incomes.
Drawing from her decades of experience, Oshodi-Oke stressed that YouTube’s influence would continue to shape Nollywood’s growth and future.
