NIGERIA: US State Department Suspends Regular Social Media Updates During Government Funding Lapse
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The United States Department of State in Nigeria has announced that its official social media accounts including those handling passport visa and consular services will not be updated regularly due to a lapse in congressional appropriations.
In a notice posted on its platforms on Saturday, the department stated Due to the lapse in appropriations this account will not be updated regularly until full operations resume with the exception of urgent safety and security information.
The statement clarified that scheduled passport and visa services in the United States and at US Embassies and Consulates overseas will continue during the funding lapse as the situation permits.
However routine public communications and account updates will remain paused until funding is restored except for emergency safety or security alerts.
The department directed the public to visit travel.state.gov for the latest information on services operating status and any available consular guidance during this period.
A government shutdown or lapse in appropriations occurs when Congress fails to pass funding legislation on time leading to temporary halts in nonessential federal operations.
Essential services including those related to national security public safety and certain consular functions typically continue with limited staffing.
No specific timeline for resolution was provided in the notice. The public is advised to monitor travel.state.gov or official embassy channels for updates on visa passport renewals appointments and other c
onsular matters.
