In the heart of Nigeria’s bustling legal corridors and markets, there is a woman named Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, whose spirit is as unyielding as the harmattan winds.
Born into a society where the worth of women is often measured by tradition and silence, she refused to bend to those chains. Like the rivers that flow tirelessly through the land, Uju carved her path with a fierce determination, blending the sharpness of her legal mind with the warmth of a mother’s heart, in the discharge of her duties.
Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, appointed as Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs in August 2023, made a profound impact during her short tenure. Known for her unwavering resolve, Ohanenye prioritised the rights and welfare of Nigerian women, tackling critical issues like gender-based violence (GBV) and promoting women’s economic empowerment (WEE).
One of her hallmark initiatives was advocating for the establishment of mobile courts to expedite the handling of GBV cases, ensuring that victims received timely justice.
Ohanenye also championed the involvement of traditional and religious leaders in eradicating harmful cultural practices, such as female genital mutilation, which continue to undermine the health and dignity of Nigerian women.
A significant achievement during her time in office was her intervention in the case of Ruth Ogunleye, a female soldier who suffered sexual harassment and abuse at the hands of her superiors.
Ohanenye personally ensured Ogunleye received the care she needed, calling for a thorough investigation by the Nigerian Army. This case highlighted her commitment to justice and the welfare of women in vulnerable situations.
Her fierce advocacy was further demonstrated in her confrontation with staff at Asokoro Hospital, following the death of a kidnapped female journalist. Ohanenye’s confrontation underscored her readiness to hold institutions accountable, showing that her dedication to women’s rights was not just in words but in decisive action.
Throughout her time in office, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye worked tirelessly to uplift Nigerian women, striving to secure their rights, economic independence, and protection from violence.
Though her time in office was brief, her achievements continue to resonate, inspiring future efforts in the fight for gender equality and women’s empowerment in Nigeria.
