President Donald Trump of the United States has publicly acknowledged the presence of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, during the 74th National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., drawing attention to her faith and public standing.
The annual gathering, which brings together political and religious leaders from around the world, briefly shifted focus when the American president paused his address to recognise Mrs. Tinubu among the dignitaries in attendance.
Trump described her as a respected figure, referencing her spiritual role in Nigeria and commending her influence.
He said: “We’re honored to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria, who also happens to serve as a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria. A very respected woman. First Lady, please, where are you? Thank you very much. It’s a great honor. Thank you very much. Very respected person, too.”
The recognition comes amid ongoing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Abuja, including discussions around security and religious freedom.
U.S. officials have recently signalled continued interest in the protection of faith-based communities, while Nigeria’s federal government maintains that it is committed to safeguarding the rights of citizens regardless of religious affiliation.
The National Prayer Breakfast remains a longstanding U.S. tradition focused on prayer, reflection, and dialogue among leaders across political and fait
h communities.
