Nigeria – Transportation Cost To Skyrocket In Nigeria As NNPCL Stations Hike Petrol Price Again
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Transportation costs are expected to rise sharply across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other states in Nigeria following another increase in petrol prices by some stations of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) on Wednesday.
Several NNPCL stations in Abuja have raised the price of petrol from ₦897 to ₦1,030 per litre, as observed by our correspondent. This marks a significant hike of ₦133, or 14.8%, coming just weeks after a previous increase.
At the NNPCL mega station in the Central Area of Abuja, a customer told African Culture TV that petrol was being sold at ₦1,030 per litre. It was, however, not seen on the notice board and the pump attendant refused to give details on the increment.
The station did not display the price on signboards or fuel metres, leaving customers to rely solely on verbal communication from the attendants regarding the new cost.
However, when approached, staff of NNPCL station in Guzape, Asokoro area of the FCT, told our reporter that they do not know anything about the current price.
Meanwhile, the station was not selling fuel as at the time our correspondent visited the place.
This is the second price hike within a month, signaling more pressure on transportation costs in Nigeria’s capital.
The increase is expected to have a ripple effect across the city, significantly impacting the cost of commuting, goods transportation, and overall daily expenses for residents.
The latest price surge comes amid ongoing concerns over the rising cost of living, following the removal of fuel subsidies earlier this year.
Transport operators, who are already grappling with higher fuel costs, are likely to pass on the additional burden to commuters, leading to a spike in fares.
Many Abuja residents, who rely on public transportation for their daily commute, will be hit hard by this development.
The lack of transparency in displaying fuel prices at some stations adds to the frustration of consumers, who are already struggling with inflation and economic challenges.
NNPC is yet to release any official statement or price in respect of the hike observed on Wednesday, as at the time of filing this report.
