Renowned actress and humanitarian, Tonto Dikeh, and All Progressives Congress (APC) National Youth Leader, Dayo Israel, and others have been inducted into the International Society of Diplomats (ISD) during the official inauguration of its Nigerian branch.
The event, held on Tuesday at the NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja, marked a significant milestone in the organisation’s mission to promote global peace and diplomacy.
Themed “Diplomacy and International Cooperation: Pivotal to Sustainable Peace and Development,” the occasion brought together high-profile dignitaries, including diplomats, policymakers, security experts, scholars, and professionals, to deliberate on the critical role of diplomacy in addressing pressing global challenges and fostering sustainable development.
Dr. Isa Yuguda, former Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the occasion, opened the ceremony with an address emphasising the essential link between peace and development.
He said: “Without peace, foreign investments and capital, which are crucial for growth, cannot be attracted to Nigeria. Diplomacy remains the magic wand for securing sustainable peace and fostering development.”
In his welcome remarks, Professor Edet B. Ekpenyong, ISD Country Director and Head of Mission, celebrated Nigeria’s pivotal role in African diplomacy and announced that the African Headquarters of the International Society of Diplomats would be established in Nigeria.
“This milestone reflects the unwavering support of the Nigerian government,” he said, while emphasizing ISD’s commitment to fostering international partnerships and driving solutions to global challenges.
Delivering the keynote address, H.E. Ambassador Manuel Fernandez, Secretary-General of ISD, reaffirmed the organisation’s mission to promote peace through dialogue and collaboration. Similarly, H.E. Ambassador Ndolamb Ngokwey, D.R. Congo Ambassador to the United Kingdom, represented by Dr. Matthew Ogwuche, delivered an inaugural lecture titled “Diplomacy and International Cooperation: Pivotal to Sustainable Peace and Development.”
The lecture traced the evolution of global diplomacy and highlighted its critical role in resolving modern crises, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and instability in the Sahel region.
A goodwill message from the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, delivered by Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, aligned with the event’s theme. The message highlighted the importance of international diplomacy and cooperation in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
The highlight of the event was the induction ceremony, where Tonto Dikeh, Dayo Israel, and other inductees were decorated, took the Oath of Allegiance, and received certificates recognizing their commitment to peace and humanitarian service.
Speaking on the rigorous selection process, Professor Ekpenyong stated, “The inductees were screened for integrity, professionalism, and dedication to humanity. They are now ambassadors for peace and sustainable development.”
Awards and recognitions were also presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to leadership, diplomacy, and humanitarian causes. The ceremony concluded with cultural performances, live music, and a banquet, providing a platform for networking and collaboration.
Headquartered in Canada and founded four years ago, the International Society of Diplomats is dedicated to fostering diplomacy, international cooperation, and sustainable development.
