Nigeria will continue to spearhead the affairs of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for another year.
On Sunday, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu was re-elected for a one-year tenure as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of States and Government.
The decision was made unanimously by fellow Heads of Government during the 65th Ordinary Session of the authority held at the State House in Abuja.
President Tinubu, whose first tenure is set to end on July 9, 2024, expressed his gratitude in his acceptance speech.
“I have accepted to continue to deliver on this service with the great men and women on this democratic journey, to serve our interest and build democratic values on the structure we inherited,” he said.
On Saturday night, sources within the presidency had indicated the likelihood of Tinubu’s re-election.
“Some people say he should handover, and others say he should continue. But they will decide tomorrow,” said the source who craved anonymity.
Tinubu was first elected Chairman of the Authority during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the regional bloc last July in Bissau, the capital of Guinea-Bissau.
