The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled plans to establish Blood Collection Centers in all the 774 local government areas across the country, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This development was announced by Head of Media and Publicity for the National Blood Service Agency (NBSA), Abdullahi Haruna, in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja.
According to him, the aim is to address critical blood shortages and improve access to blood during medical emergencies and transfusions.
Haruna also highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that adequate blood supply is available throughout the country to save lives.
Prof. Saleh Yuguda, Director-General of the NBSA, emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating, “We are working tirelessly to ensure that blood needs are adequately addressed, and this initiative is a significant step towards achieving that goal.”
He further disclosed that the NBSA has partnered with the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) to establish a robust blood bank at the Corps’ medical facility.
He said this collaboration aims to mitigate blood shortages during emergencies and provide critical support to sister security agencies.
As part of the rollout, the FCT will host strategic blood collection facilities in easily accessible locations to increase donation rates and ensure a steady supply for medical purposes.
“The establishment of blood collection centers across Nigeria is a testament to the government’s commitment to improving the country’s healthcare system,” Yuguda added. “As the project rolls out, Nigerians should expect improved access to blood transfusions and better health outcomes.”
Deputy Commandant Emeka Okeke of the NSCDC also praised the initiative, stating, “This initiative will play a vital role in addressing blood shortages and saving lives.”
