By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where he is set to participate in the Joint Arab-Islamic Summit, focusing on urgent issues in the Middle East, including the Israel-Palestine conflict.
His presidential jet landed at King Abdulaziz International Airport at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, where he was greeted by Riyadh’s Deputy Governor, Prince Mohammed AbdulRahman.
President Tinubu is anticipated to make a firm appeal for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Palestine.
According to his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu plans to urge summit leaders to prioritise peace efforts and explore sustainable solutions to the long-standing conflict.
“Nigeria’s call is clear and firm,” Onanuga stated, highlighting Tinubu’s focus on diplomacy and a renewed commitment to the two-state solution as a potential pathway to lasting peace. “The president believes a ceasefire is critical to halting civilian suffering and fostering an environment for dialogue.”
The summit, hosted by Saudi King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is expected to bring together leaders from Arab and Islamic nations to discuss not only the Middle East crisis but also broader issues affecting stability in the region.
Accompanying the president are key Nigerian officials, including Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Information Minister Alhaji Mohammed Idris, and the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
The Nigerian delegation aims to bolster efforts toward peace and address humanitarian concerns within the region, standing with global calls for an end to hostilities and a renewed push for diplomatic engagement.
