Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to prioritise the completion of all abandoned critical infrastructure projects across the Niger Delta region.
The directive was issued on Saturday during the 25th anniversary plenary of the NDDC held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Themed “Transmitting Vision to Reality for the Sustainable Development of the Niger Delta Region,” the event brought together key stakeholders and dignitaries.
Speaking on behalf of the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said the directive aligns with the administration’s commitment to the development of the region, given its significant contributions to Nigeria’s growth.
Tinubu stated: “I have directed the NDDC, through the Ministry of Regional Development, to complete and deliver all abandoned critical projects throughout the Niger Delta region.”
Projects highlighted for immediate completion include the Ka-Ataba Bridge, Okrika-Borokiri Bridge, Bonny Ring Road, Barigolo Road and bridges, and the East-West Sampou roads and bridges, among others.
The President affirmed the Federal Government’s full support for the NDDC to ensure it remains adequately empowered to fulfil its mandate of transforming the region.
He also encouraged the commission to continue investing in human capital development and executing projects that directly benefit rural communities.
He commended the NDDC’s “Light Up the Niger Delta” initiative for its role in improving security and boosting economic activities at night.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks, acknowledged the National Assembly’s historic role in establishing the NDDC and reiterated the legislature’s ongoing support for its developmental objectives.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan also called for stable leadership in the commission and urged the NDDC to explore renewable energy and sustainable development options for the region’s long-term future.
Jonathan noted: “The next 25 years should focus on diversification and sustainable opportunities for growth in the Niger Delta.”
Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, in a keynote address, stressed the need for measurable outcomes. She noted that while the NDDC has made progress, much more must be done to meaningfully improve living conditions in the region.
The Minister of Regional Development, Mr. Abubakar Momoh, praised the NDDC for completing major infrastructure projects including the 25.7km Ogbia-Emakalakala-Akipelai-Etiama-Nembe Road and the 800-metre Ibeno Bridge. He noted that these developments have significantly impacted local communities.
Chairman of the NDDC Governing Board, Mr. Chiedu Ebie, highlighted the board’s focus on stakeholder engagement, while Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku described the 25th anniversary as a turning point for the commission.
