By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday leave Abuja for a two-nation visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, the President’s first stop will be Johannesburg, where he will attend the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit before proceeding to Angola for the AU-EU Summit.
President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20, invited President Tinubu to participate in this year’s gathering. Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva had also extended a similar invitation to President Tinubu during Brazil’s presidency of the group in 2024.
The G20 Summit, themed “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” will hold from November 22 to 23 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre.
The statement buttressed: “Themed, ‘Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,’ the two-day summit will afford participants the opportunity to deliberate extensively during three plenary sessions devoted to: Inclusive and Sustainable Growth, Leaving No One Behind: Building our economies, the role of trade, Financing for development and the Debt burden; A Resilient World-the G20’s Contribution to Disaster Risk Reduction; Climate Change; Just Energy Transitions; Food Systems and A fair and Just Future for All: Critical Minerals; Decent Work; Artificial Intelligence.”
Onanuga noted that the President will take advantage of the summit to deepen engagements under the Renewed Hope Agenda through several bilateral meetings focused on peace, security and development.
At the conclusion of the G20 Summit, President Tinubu will join other Heads of State and Government for the 7th African Union–European Union Summit, scheduled for November 24 to 25, 2025, in Luanda, Angola.
The meeting will bring together young leaders, innovators and civil society organisations to propose solutions to shared challenges on climate change, inclusive development, infrastructure, digital economy, the creative sector, manufacturing and agribusiness.
“President Tinubu will be accompanied by top government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, and other key ministers and security chiefs,” the statement read.
He is expected to return to Nigeria at the end of both meetings.
