The President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has instructed the Nigerian Army to launched a full-scale operation against banditry and kidnapping in Kwara State, following the deployment of a complete brigade and heavy military equipment to various flashpoints across the state.
According to reports, troops have already begun moving through communities in Ifelodun Local Government Area, particularly Oke Ode and Babanla, as part of a coordinated operation that will also extend to Edu and Patigi local government areas.
It was further stated that the military intervention aims to flush out kidnappers who have been terrorising residents and using dense forest areas as hideouts to launch attacks and demand ransoms.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq confirmed the development in a statement released on Wednesday, expressing appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift support and commitment to restoring public safety in the state.
He said, adding that the deployment represents a major step toward ending insecurity in affected areas : “We will not spare any resources in support of the military, DSS, police, and other security agencies as they work to strengthen the security of lives and properties,”
The governor further noted that the new operation forms part of the broader ‘Operation Fasan Yanma’ — a nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating violent criminal networks. He expressed optimism that the operation would bring lasting peace to the troubled parts of Kwara South and Kwara North.
“We are upbeat that this operation will eliminate all forms of threats in affected areas. I thank the President and the security agencies for their efforts so far. As I said a few days ago, we just need to double our efforts to save the people,” he said.
Governor AbdulRazaq also praised the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Army Staff, the General Officer Commanding the 2nd Division, and the Brigade Commander, Brigadier General A.A. Babatunde, for their commitment and coordination.
Residents have reported seeing military convoys and heavy machinery moving through several communities in preparation for the operation, which is expected to intensify in the coming days.
