NIGERIA: Tinubu Celebrates Remo Stars’ Title Win, Hails Rise Of Grassroots Football

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday, praised Remo Stars Football Club for clinching their first-ever Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) title.
He described the triumph as a landmark moment not just for Ikenne and Ogun State but for the future of grassroots sports development in Nigeria.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President lauded the club’s players, technical crew, and management for their “hard work, discipline, and unyielding spirit.”
He noted that their persistence after three near-misses exemplifies the power of resilience.
“Their courage in pursuing success despite three previous near-misses in the race for the league title is admirable. I hope their example will inspire other Nigerian clubs to chase their dreams with tenacity and optimism,” Tinubu said.
Beyond the celebration of a hard-won title, the President turned the spotlight on Remo Stars’ chairman and owner, Mr. Kunle Soname, whose investment in a world-class stadium in Ikenne has been pivotal.
Tinubu hailed Soname’s commitment as proof that private sector involvement is crucial to elevating Nigerian football.
“The triumph of Remo Stars underscores what can be achieved when vision meets investment. Kunle Soname’s dedication to grassroots football is planting seeds that will bear fruits far beyond today’s victory,” the President noted.
With the league trophy secured, Remo Stars are now set to fly Nigeria’s flag at the 2025 CAF Champions League, an opportunity Tinubu urged them to embrace with “undaunting spirit and focus.”
The president also called on Nigerian football fans to rally behind Remo Stars as they prepare for the continental stage, stressing that national pride is at stake.
