Omoyele Sowore, a Nigerian activist and former presidential candidate, has finally spoken after his arrest at the Lagos state airport.
Recall that Sowore was arrested upon his arrival at the Lagos state airport on Sunday.
Speaking after his release, Sowore expressed his commitment to Nigeria, stating, “I am back home because I had promised to return after my trips in March and May. No matter what anyone tries, I am here to stay.”
Sowore revealed that he was informed of being on the highest level of the government’s watchlist which he described as an “upgrade” by the authorities.
He said: “I have been monitored since my university days in 1992, but now I’ve been placed on the highest level.
“This means I am detained and escorted upon arrival.”
He also referred to his new status as akin to receiving a “GCFR of the National Award for Troublemakers.”
At the airport, Sowore’s passport was seized by immigration officials due to a notation requiring confirmation from Abuja.
After a brief detention and a wait of about 30 minutes, he was cleared to go.
Sowore also reported that one of his bags was missing and expressed concerns that it might have been tampered with.
He has filed a report with the airline and is awaiting further action.
