NIGERIA: Senate Resumption Delayed To May 6 Over Workers’ Day, Constituency Engagements

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The 10th Senate has officially shifted its resumption date from April 29 to May 6, 2025, to accommodate the International Workers’ Day holiday.
The adjustment is to also allow lawmakers ample time to engage with their constituents.
The postponement was communicated through an internal memo dated April 20, 2025, and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Andrew Ogbonna Nwoba.
The memo, addressed to all senators, emphasized the need to recognize the May 1 public holiday and prioritize constituency-related activities.
“Distinguished Senators, I am directed to inform you that the resumption of plenary sittings of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Monday, 29th April 2025, has been rescheduled to Tuesday, 6th May 2025,” the circular read.
“This postponement is made to allow Distinguished Senators to stay with their constituents during the International Workers’ Day public holiday in the first week of May and to further enhance constituency engagements,” it added.
The memo also acknowledged any inconvenience the change may cause and urged senators to take note of the adjustment.
The Senate had previously adjourned its plenary on March 27 to enable members observe the Easter and Eid-El-Fitr celebrations.
With the new date, legislative business at the upper chamber is now set to resume in the second week of May.
