Saudi Arabia has officially declared Friday, June 6, 2025, as the date for Eid-el-Adha, following the sighting of the crescent moon that marks the beginning of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
The announcement, made on Tuesday via the verified Haramain Sharifain account on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed that Dhul Hijjah 1446 AH begins on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
According to the statement, the key dates for this year’s Islamic observances are as follows: the First Day of Dhul Hijjah, Wednesday, May 28, 2025; the Day of Arafah, Thursday, June 5, 2025; and Eid-el-Adha (Sallah Day), Friday, June 6, 2025.
The Day of Arafah, which falls on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, is widely regarded as the most spiritually significant day of the Hajj pilgrimage. On this day, pilgrims gather at Mount Arafat to offer prayers and seek forgiveness in what is considered the peak of the pilgrimage rituals.
Eid-el-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is observed on the tenth day of Dhul Hijjah. The celebration commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham’s) willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. Special prayers, acts of charity, and the ritual sacrifice of livestock, including rams, cows, and camels, mark the day.
