NIGERIA: Sanwo-Olu Commissions West Africa’s Largest University Library at LASU
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Tuesday commissioned the Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu Library Complex at the Lagos State University (LASU), describing it as the largest university library in West Africa.

Speaking during the commissioning, the governor said the project represents Lagos State’s commitment to intellectual empowerment and the advancement of education and technology.
Sanwo-Olu said: “This moment is deeply personal, not because this edifice bears my name, but because it represents the very ideals that have shaped my journey, the belief that education is the bridge between potential and purpose.”
The governor described the library as more than a building, calling it “a celebration of an idea that learning transforms destinies, and libraries, though made of stone and steel, are truly built with dreams and determination.”
He added that the complex, equipped with digital research facilities, reading lounges, innovation labs, and archives, is a tangible expression of Lagos’ vision to drive development through education and technology.
Under the THEMES+ Agenda, Sanwo-Olu said the state government has continued to strengthen the education sector with initiatives like the EkoDigital programme, LASU Technology Hub, and the new library complex.
He stated: “We are deliberately nurturing a generation of thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers young Lagosians who will lead the Fourth Industrial Revolution from the heart of Africa’s most dynamic city.”
While expressing humility at having the library named after him, the governor stressed that the gesture should not be viewed as self-glorification but as a symbol of service and commitment to education.
“For me, leadership is not about leaving one’s name on walls, but about leaving an impact on people’s lives,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He urged the university’s management, faculty, and students to safeguard the library and make it the centre of academic excellence and innovation.
“This is not the library of old. This is a library for the future, where printed words meet digital possibilities, where heritage meets innovation, and where silence becomes the loudest sound of progress,” he said.
Sanwo-Olu concluded by encouraging students to take full advantage of the facility.
“To every young Lagosian listening today: dream boldly, study passionately, and remember that Lagos State believes in you,” he said.
The new library complex at LASU is expected to serve as a hub for research, innovation, and digital learning, reaffirming the institution’s position as one of Africa’s leading centres of academic excellence.
