NIGERIA: Rivers Political Upheaval: Head Of Service Resigns As Sole Administrator Restructures Government

By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The crisis in Rivers State has taken another turn with the resignation of the Head of Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, a key official in the suspended administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Nwaeke’s departure, confirmed in a statement from the Chief of Staff to the Sole Administrator, comes as the state undergoes sweeping changes under the leadership of Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.).
The resignation marks another shift in the state’s power structure, following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency, which led to the suspension of the governor, his deputy, and the state legislature.
In a formal statement, Ibas expressed appreciation for Nwaeke’s contributions during his brief tenure under the new administration and extended well wishes for his future endeavors.
As part of his efforts to restructure the government, Ibas has appointed Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika as the new Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The appointment, according to a statement from the Sole Administrator’s office, was based on Worika’s extensive background in academia, international law, and policy advisory roles.
With the state still grappling with political uncertainty, the new administration is pushing forward with key appointments aimed at stabilizing governance.
Ibas emphasized that his administration remains committed to restoring order, ensuring security, and implementing the mandate set by the federal government.
