The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate has yet been released under the recent presidential prerogative of mercy exercise.
Fagbemi in a statement released on Thursday explained that the process is still at its final administrative stage, which involves a comprehensive review to ensure that all names and recommendations meet legal and procedural requirements before any release instruments are issued.
According to him, the final phase of the exercise, which follows approval by the Council of State, entails the preparation of official documents for each beneficiary.
This stage, he noted, allows for a final verification of the list before forwarding it to the Controller General of Corrections for implementation.
He added that the verification process reflects the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and adherence to due process.
The Attorney General also commended members of the public for their vigilance and constructive feedback, saying that such engagement strengthens the justice system and promotes good governance.
Fagbemi dismissed claims of delay, stressing that the process is being carried out strictly in line with the law to ensure that only duly qualified individuals benefit from the President’s mercy.
He assured that the public will be duly informed once all checks are completed, adding that the rule of law prioritizes fairness over haste.
