President Bola Tinubu on Friday administered the oath of office to Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the 23rd acting Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN).
The ceremony took place on Friday at the Council Chamber of the State House following the retirement of Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who stepped down upon reaching the statutory retirement age of 70.
During the swearing-in, President Tinubu charged Justice Kekere-Ekun to uphold the independence of the judiciary and remain loyal to the Nigerian constitution.
He emphasized the importance of the judiciary in maintaining social order, the rule of law, and fostering economic development.
“I urge your Lordship to be faithful and loyal to the constitution of Nigeria. I also encourage you to defend the independence of the judiciary,” Tinubu stated, adding that his administration would continue to support the judiciary to ensure the effective administration of justice.
Tinubu highlighted recent judicial reforms under his administration, including the Judicial Office Holders Act of 2024, which increased the remuneration of judicial officers by 300%. He also emphasized the need for the judiciary to maintain integrity, transparency, and public confidence in its operations.
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who attended the ceremony, lauded Kekere-Ekun’s appointment, noting its significance for the separation of powers in Nigeria.
Justice Kekere-Ekun, who is 66 years old, will serve in an acting capacity pending her confirmation by the Senate. She is expected to lead the judiciary until her retirement in 2028.
The event was attended by several high-profile officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, former CJN Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, members of the National Judicial Council, and representatives of the Nigerian Bar Association
