By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to various countries and international organisations, including the United Nations.
The list comprises 34 non-career and 31 career ambassadors, marking one of the largest diplomatic postings in recent years.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga announced the development on Thursday.
Among the high-profile non-career appointees, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode has been assigned to Germany, while presidential aide Reno Omokri has been posted to Mexico.
Former Katsina State Governor Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau will serve in Beijing (China), and Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has been designated as Nigeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations.
Other notable non-career postings include Senator Ita Enang to South Africa, former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu to Spain, former Health Minister Prof. Isaac Adewole to Canada and Lateef Kayode Are to the United States. Senator Grace Bent will serve in Lomé (Togo), former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in Athens (Greece), and Aminu Dalhatu as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. Ayodele Oke, former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, has been assigned to France.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already secured agrément from the United Kingdom for High Commissioner-designate Aminu Dalhatu and from France for Ambassador Ayodele Oke.
The ministry has conveyed the nominations of the remaining 62 envoys to their respective countries and requested their agréments in line with standard diplomatic practice.
President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to immediately commence an induction programme for the ambassadors-designate and high commissioners.
The Senate confirmed all 65 nominees in December 2025 following screening by the Committee on Foreign Affairs.
The postings come after a prolonged period without substantive ambassadors in many Nigerian missions, with the last major exercise conducted in 2017 under former President Muhammad Buhari. Nigeria maintains diplomatic presence in over 100 countries through embassies, high commissions, and consulates.
The appointees are expected to assume duty after completing induction and receiving final appro
val from host countries.
