NIGERIA: Pope Leo XIV Calls For Urgent Dialogue Amid Deadly US-Iran Escalation In Middle East
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
Pope Leo XIV has voiced deep concern over the recent military escalation in the Middle East, urging all involved nations to embrace dialogue and avoid further violence that could lead to irreversible catastrophe.
In his Angelus address on Sunday, the Pontiff highlighted the moral imperative for restraint following reports of joint airstrikes by the United States and Israel on Iranian targets.
The Pope emphasised that true stability and peace cannot be achieved through mutual threats or the use of weapons that cause destruction, suffering, and loss of life. Instead, he advocated for reasonable, authentic, and responsible discussions in line with international norms.
He warned that unchecked escalation risks plunging the region into an irreparable abyss, with far-reaching global consequences.
The appeal comes amid heightened tensions after Israel and the United States reportedly launched airstrikes on Tehran and other Iranian cities on Saturday.
Iran responded with retaliatory strikes targeting Israel and several Gulf nations hosting American military bases.
In a significant development, Iranian state media announced the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led the country for nearly 37 years.
Pope Leo XIV concluded by praying for the resurgence of diplomacy to foster peaceful coexistence based on justice, underscoring the longing of affected peoples for such an outcome.
The Vatican has reiterated its commitment to supporting mediation effo
rts in the crisis.
