Nigeria Police To Resume Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement From January 2 Amid Rising Crime Concerns
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigeria Police Force has announced the resumption of strict enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy effective January 2, 2026, citing a surge in criminal activities facilitated by unauthorised vehicle tinting.
In a statement issued by Force Public Relations Officer CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police clarified that no court order has ever restrained them from enforcing the law on tinted glass usage.
Enforcement was voluntarily suspended earlier to give motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation without undue pressure.
Recent security trends, however, have prompted the decision to reinstate full implementation. Authorities highlighted a disturbing increase in crimes, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences where perpetrators exploit heavily tinted vehicles to conceal identities and evade detection.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun assured the public that the renewed drive will be conducted professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in strict adherence to the law. He emphasised the Force’s commitment to public safety and collaboration with stakeholders to maintain national security.
Motorists requiring tinted glass permits have been urged to apply promptly through official channels to ensure compliance ahead of the resumption date.
The announcement comes as part of broader efforts to address emerging threats and strengthen road safety measures across the country.
