NIGERIA: Police Condemn Officers Over Assault On Motorist In Viral Video
By Onoja Baba, Nigeria
The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the conduct of some of its officers captured in a viral video attempting to forcibly remove a pair of glasses from a motorist during a stop-and-search operation and subsequently assaulting him.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Force confirmed that the officers involved have been identified as personnel attached to the Lagos State Police Command.
The Commissioner of Police in charge of the Lagos Command was immediately briefed and has taken swift action to ensure that the errant officers face disciplinary measures.
He has also ordered the restructuring of the squad implicated in the incident.
According to the Force, the misconduct was an isolated case that does not reflect the professional standards expected of police personnel.
“The leadership of the Force remains committed to identifying and sanctioning the very few errant officers whose actions embarrass the hardworking, dedicated and responsible personnel of the Police,” the statement read.
The Police further assured the public of its determination to uphold professionalism and maintain public trust in law enforcement.
