The Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL), the governing body for referees in the Premier League, has terminated the contract of referee David Coote following an in-depth investigation into his conduct.
The PGMOL issued a statement on Monday, confirming the dismissal and citing multiple “serious breaches” of his employment contract, which ultimately made his position “untenable.”
The statement reads in part: “David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract.”
Recall that Coote, 42, was suspended by the body on November 11, 2024, after a video allegedly showed him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and the club’s former manager, Jürgen Klopp, which went viral on social media.
While the investigation into his conduct was ongoing, a report published by The Sun on November 13 revealed images allegedly showing the 42-year-old using a white powder during the summer’s European Championship, further complicating his case.
The PGMOL confirmed that Coote’s actions had made his position “untenable.”
The organization also stated that Coote has the right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment.
