NIGERIA: Peter Obi Denies Merger Talks, Calls For Unity Ahead Of 2027 Elections
By Onoja Baba, Abuja
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has dismissed reports of ongoing merger discussions with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), or any other political party.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Obi clarified that no agreements or collaborations were underway.
He emphasised that the Labour Party’s independence and focus is on uniting Nigerians for the 2027 elections.
“There are no merger talks with any party at this moment,” Obi stated.
“We must focus on unity and collective action to bring about the change Nigerians desire,” he added.
The former governor also used the opportunity to address the nation’s growing security concerns, describing the situation as “tragic” and urging swift, comprehensive action to curb the escalating violence across the country.
“Our nation is at a critical juncture, and we cannot ignore the worsening insecurity. It demands immediate and effective measures to protect lives and restore peace,” Obi said.
Obi’s remarks come as Nigeria’s political landscape begins to shift in preparation for the next general elections.
The 2023 presidential election saw Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerge victorious with 8,794,726 votes, defeating his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, by nearly two million votes.
Despite Tinubu’s victory, Obi’s Labour Party gained significant traction, particularly among the youth and urban voters, positioning itself as a formidable force in Nigeria’s evolving political arena.
As speculation about alliances and mergers continues to swirl, Obi’s commitment to building an independent Labour Party underscores his vision for a grassroots movement capable of challenging the ruling APC in 2027.
“We must remain focused and committed to creating a Nigeria where every citizen can thrive,” Obi concluded.
With his call for unity and collective action, Peter Obi has reaffirmed his role as a key player in Nigeria’s quest for a brighter future, setting the stage for what promises to be a highly competitive electoral season.
