Nigeria – PDP Suspends Dino Melaye Over Alleged Anti-Party Activities
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Nigeria’s main opposition political party, has suspended Senator Dino Melaye, a prominent member, over allegations of anti-party activities.
The suspension was announced by the ward party executive committee of Ayetoro/Iluagba Ward 1, following the review of a report by the disciplinary committee set up to investigate Melaye’s recent actions.
The letter, which was cited by African Culture TV on Friday, indicates that Melaye’s actions were considered detrimental to the interests and unity of the PDP, leading to the decision to suspend him.
This suspension is part of a broader trend within the PDP, which has recently taken a firm stance against members accused of undermining the party.
In August 2024, the party suspended Peter Babalola, a chieftain from Osun State, for alleged anti-party activities and failure to attend party meetings for two years. Similarly, the former Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, was suspended by the Benue PDP over similar accusations.
Senator Gabriel Suswam and other members were also summoned by the Benue PDP over allegations of gross misconduct and anti-party activities.
These actions highlight the PDP’s resolve to enforce party discipline and preserve unity among its members. However, details regarding Melaye’s specific actions that led to his suspension remain unclear, and further information is anticipated.
The resolution from the ward executive committee stated: “Senator Dino Melaye’s conduct has brought embarrassment and disrepute to the party, and his continued membership is no longer tenable.
Therefore, the Ward party exco hereby suspends Dino Melaye from the People’s Democratic Party, effective immediately. The suspension is in line with provisions of Article 59 (1) of the PDP constitution, which empowers the Ward party excos to take disciplinary actions against erring members.”
