By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
The Osun State Government has launched Imole Wi-Fi, a free public internet service designed to provide residents, students, businesses, and communities with reliable access to the internet.
This was made known to the public in a press statement signed by the Commissioner for Information & Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, on Monday.
According to the statement, the initiative was introduced by the Innovation, Science, Technology, and Digital Economy Office under the Office of the Special Adviser, seeks to break digital barriers and create new opportunities across the state.
Governor Ademola Adeleke described the project as a transformative step for Osun’s economy.
He said: “Imole Wi-Fi is a gateway to opportunity. With this public digital infrastructure, we are cutting barriers, connecting people, and driving growth across every sector of Osun’s economy.”
Special Adviser on Innovation, Science, Technology, and Digital Economy, Mr. Azeez Badmus, also emphasised that the rollout marks the beginning of a larger plan.
Badmus said: “This is just the first step. As we expand Imole Wi-Fi, more government services and sector-specific tools will follow, ensuring that every resident benefits from Osun’s digital future,” Badmus said.
The first phase of connections covers key locations including the Osun State Library, Alphastart Hub, Osun Mall, Salvation Army Middle School, Osogbo Grammar School, and the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Technology, and Digital Economy offices.
According to the government, the service will benefit students with access to research and online learning, support job seekers and small businesses in finding opportunities, enable hospitals and clinics to adopt telemedicine, provide farmers with vital agricultural information, and strengthen community security through digital connectivity.
The Imole Wi-Fi project is part of the state’s broader digital agenda to support education, employment, healthcare, and safety across Osun.
