The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Muyi Aina has raised alarm over the daily loss of 2,300 Nigerian children under five and 145 women of childbearing age, largely due to preventable causes.
Speaking at a two-day engagement meeting on vaccination, maternal, and child health in Abuja, Aina emphasized that most of these deaths occur in northern Nigeria, underscoring the urgent need to improve access to healthcare and immunization.
“Every day, we are losing far too many women and children,” Aina stated, adding that Nigeria is also battling the spread of circulating variant poliovirus Type 2 (cVPV2), with 70 cases recorded across 14 northern states.
Aina urged religious leaders to support efforts to improve maternal and child health, ensuring that no family is left behind.
He called for increased community engagement to break down barriers to care and build trust between healthcare providers and local communities.
The meeting, organized by the Sultan Foundation for Peace and Development with support from the NPHCDA, also featured the Sultan of Sokoto, HRH Saad Abubakar III, who stressed the need for religious leaders to promote health, peace, and security in their communities.
