Veteran Nollywood actor Segun Remi, famously known as Chief Kanran, has been pronounced dead in the early hours of Friday, aged 73.
Seun Oloketuyi, founder of the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, announced the news in an Instagram post. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Chief Kanran, who began acting professionally in 1975, was widely known for his roles in both English and Yoruba-language productions, often portraying wealthy characters. He featured in popular TV series such as Images, Mirror in the Sun and Megafortune, as well as notable films like Vigilante, Ose-Sango, Itunnu, Eewo and Shattered Bridge.
In 2021, he revealed that he had faced financial and personal hardships, including a fire incident in 2017 that destroyed his production equipment, and a robbery that left him homeless.
Tributes have begun pouring in from colleagues and fans who describe him as a talented actor whose work left a lasting impact on Nollywood. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by the family.
