Nigerian pilgrims who journeyed to Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj have begun their return home following the successful completion of the pilgrimage.
This was disclosed officially by the Saudi authorities, who declared the Hajj for Islamic year 1446 concluded on Monday.
According to the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, return flights for Nigerian pilgrims began on June 9. Over 1.67 million Muslims performed the sacred rites this year, including thousands from Nigeria.
While many pilgrims expressed gratitude and joy for the opportunity to complete the pilgrimage, the exercise was also marked by somber moments.
Seven Nigerian pilgrims, hailing from Oyo, Abia, Edo, Plateau, and Kano states, were confirmed dead due to health complications such as cardiac arrest and heart failure. They were laid to rest in Saudi Arabia in accordance with Islamic burial rites.
The 2025 figure marks a significant drop in fatalities compared to the previous year, which saw over 30 Nigerian deaths.
In a statement made by Deputy Emir of the Makkah Region, Prince Saud bin Mishaal, Saudi Arabia commended the leadership of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for ensuring the smooth conduct of the pilgrimage.
He said: “The pilgrims performed their rites in safety and peace, thanks to the distinguished execution of operational plans.”
He reported that 1,673,230 pilgrims took part, 1,506,576 from outside the Kingdom and 166,654 domestic pilgrims.
Mishaal noted; “Total pilgrims of 1,673,230, including 877,841 male pilgrims and 795,389 female pilgrims.”
Prince Mishaal attributed the success of the Hajj to meticulous planning and strong coordination between various agencies, adding that pilgrims’ compliance with regulations also played a vital role.
He confirmed that preparations for the next Hajj season will commence immediately, affirming the Kingdom’s ongoing commitment to serving pilgrims and preserving the sanctity of the holy sites.
