NIGERIA: Nigeria–US Defence Cooperation Deepens With Arrival Of Military Trainers
By Ameenat Hamzat, Lagos, Nigeria
Nigeria’s defence partnership with the United States has entered a new operational phase following the arrival of about 100 American military trainers and associated equipment at Bauchi Airfield to support capacity-building efforts within the Nigerian Armed Forces.
The deployment, announced by the Defence Headquarters, in statement signed by Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, stems from prior bilateral engagements between Nigerian officials and their US counterparts, culminating in a formal request by the Federal Government for targeted training, technical support and intelligence collaboration.
According to the Defence Headquarters, the cooperation is structured to enhance Nigeria’s operational readiness against terrorism and strengthen the protection of vulnerable communities nationwide.
“The collaboration will provide access to specialized technical capabilities aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ability to deter terrorists threats and enhance the protection of vulnerable communities across the country,” the DHQ stated.
Military authorities clarified that the US personnel are present strictly in advisory and training roles, not as combat forces. All activities will operate under Nigerian government authority and in coordination with local military leadership.
The statement added: “The US personnel are technical specialists serving strictly in an advisory and training capacity. They are not combat forces. All training activities will be conducted under the authority, direction and control of the Nigerian Government and in close coordination with the Nigerian Armed Forces.”
Nigerian troops are expected to begin joint training exercises and intelligence-focused engagements with the visiting specialists.
Defence officials say the initiative is designed to improve the Armed Forces’ ability to identify and neutralise extremist threats seeking to destabilise the country.
Reaffirming its commitment to national security, the Defence Headquarters emphasized continued efforts to dismantle terrorist networks threatening Nigeria’s sovereignty and citizen safety, while assuring the public of transparency in reporting ongoing coope
ration activities.
